What you'll do
- Welcome migrant and asylum-seeking guests as they enter sanctuary hotels and connect with city services

What you bring
- A bachelor’s degree or relevant social-services experience supporting vulnerable people affected by significant trauma
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish is preferred for bilingual case services
- Experience with trauma-informed support, crisis intervention, immigration procedures, child development, or child welfare
- Strong communication, organization, independent judgment, teamwork, and quick problem-solving ability
- Ability to pass Cherokee Federal’s pre-employment qualifications and carry up to twenty pounds

You’ll work under the Social Service Director alongside hotel operations, security staff, city agencies, and community organizations. Spanish and English fluency is preferred, and the role involves clients affected by significant trauma.

With Direction and guidance from the Social Service Director, community associates will deliver on-site trauma-informed social services at city sanctuary hotels throughout New York City. Working cooperatively with hotel operation and security staff, community associates will welcome and engage migrant an asylum-seeking single adult, families with children, or adult families (without children as they enter the sanctuary hotel and navigate New York City. Community Associates will compete culturally sensitive assessments to identify strengths, barriers, and service needs; make referrals to address those needs; and coordinate with City agencies, immigration services, and other community-based organizations.

Starting Salary Range for Community Associate: $24.74 per hour

Community Associate Responsibilities Include:
• Culturally sensitive registration, intake, roster tracking, and assessment
• Bilingual Spanish/English case services
• Referrals to community-based programs and organizations
• Coordination with interpretation and translation services
• Coordination with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) on student registration, school placement, attendance, transportation, and troubleshooting as needed
• Referrals to ESL instruction
• Referrals for childcare
• Medical care coordination
• Coordination with the Mayor’s Office of Immigration Affairs (MOIS)
• Referrals to immigration legal services
• Other tasks as necessary to facilitate delivery of necessary services to clients, including storage and distribution of packaged meals.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned
• Community Associate Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
• Bachelor’s degree or relevant social services experience with people who are vulnerable and have experienced significant trauma.
• Preferred bachelor’s degree in social work or other human services field + two years of relevant experience working with people who are vulnerable and have experienced significant trauma
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to learn quickly and problem solve
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Basic understanding of immigration laws and procedures
• Fluent in English and Spanish (written and spoken) preferred
• Solid understanding of trauma and experience delivering trauma-informed services
• Crisis intervention experience
• Knowledge of immigration laws and regulations
• Understanding of child development and child welfare
• Past applicable job experience may include, but is not limited to: Community Coordinator, Shift Lead, or Community Engagement Manager.
• Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
• Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Community Associate Basic Qualifications:
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
